Candy shop questions

What is penny candy?

Penny candy is the small, individually sold candy that American corner stores sold for a cent apiece through the mid-1900s: root beer barrels, wax bottles, candy buttons, taffy and the like. It's now sold by the piece or by weight rather than for an actual penny. We keep dozens of nostalgic varieties on the candy wall at our Spearfish, South Dakota shop, and customers scoop their own mix into a bag.

What old-fashioned candy do you carry?

We stock the classics people grew up with and can't find in a grocery store: retro candy bars, saltwater taffy, gummies and sours, Pop Rocks and popping candy, hand-swirled giant lollipops, chocolate novelties and Black Hills huckleberry candy. Stock rotates as suppliers discontinue items, so if you're hunting something specific, call 605-340-0470 and we'll tell you if it's in.

Do you sell Pop Rocks and popping candy?

Yes, popping candy is one of our signatures. We keep a whole display of Pop Rocks and fizzing, crackling candy in every flavor the kids ask for, right on the candy table next to the lollipops. It's one of the first things most families head for when they walk into the shop.

How does buying candy at your shop work?

Everything is scooped and bagged in-store. Take a bag, pick what you want from the displays, and we bag it at the counter with no minimum. You can build a mix of twenty different candies or a full bag of one favorite. Kids do this well, and they get to sign our signature wall on the way out.

Do you do candy for weddings and parties?

Yes. We put together candy mixes and favors for weddings, receptions, graduations, birthdays and corporate events, matched to your colors and guest count. We need about a week's notice for a large order. Call 605-340-0470 with your date, guest count and colors for a quote.
