Penny Candy, the Way It Always Was
Penny candy was never really about the penny. It was about a kid being allowed to make their own decisions, one piece at a time. That's the tradition at Kernels & Kandies: scoop-your-own candy, sold by the piece or by weight, with no minimum — on Main Street in Spearfish.

How it works
Grab a bag, scoop what you want — or pick single pieces — and we weigh it at the counter. There is no minimum. A kid with a dollar is a real customer here, with the same dignity as the adult buying a $58 gift basket.
Saltwater taffy, sours, gummies, hard candies, chocolate novelties, Pop Rocks and popping candy, plus the hand-swirled giant lollipops we make in-house. Stock rotates, so the wall is a little different every visit — which, for kids, is half the fun.
The economics lesson hiding in a candy wall
Hand a kid a small budget and the wall turns into a math problem they'll actually work on: two big pieces or six small ones? Sour now or chocolate that lasts the car ride? Parents tell us the negotiating is the best fifteen minutes of the trip.
When the decisions are final, kids sign the signature wall by the door on the way out. It's theirs until we repaint.
